INTRODUCTION

The characters, although well drawn, are not strong. Manrique is a selfish and ambitious man, who well deserves his fate. Nu?o is unscrupulous and weak, but the weakest character of all is that of Leonor, who, knowing her duty, has neither strength nor will to accomplish it. Azucena is really the most interesting character in the play. From her first sad notes of "Bramando est? el pueblo ind?mito" to her last despairing cry of "Ya est?s vengada" we do not for a minute lose sight of the mortal conflict in her soul between the vengeance which she has sworn her mother and her love for Manrique.

As great difference exists in the usage of the Spanish punctuation marks at the present day, it has been thought advisable in this edition to adopt in some cases what might be called mixed punctuation, that is, when there is a question which is also an exclamation, attention is called to the fact by the use of the interrogation point before and the exclamation point after the phrase or sentence.

ESCENA PRIMERA

JIMENO. Nadie mejor que yo puede saber esa historia; como que hace muy cerca de cuarenta a?os que estoy al servicio de los Condes de Luna.

FERRANDO. Siempre me lo han contado de diverso modo.

GUZM?N. Y como se abultan tanto las cosas...

JIMENO. Yo os lo contar? tal como ello pas? por los a?os de 1390. El Conde don Lope de Artal viv?a regularmente en Zaragoza, como que siempre estaba al lado de su Alteza. Ten?a dos ni?os: el uno que es don Nu?o, nuestro muy querido amo, y contaba entonces seis meses, poco m?s o menos, y el mayor, que tendr?a dos a?os, llamado don Juan. Una noche entr? en la casa del Conde una de esas vagabundas, una gitana con ribetes de bruja, y sin decir una palabra se desliz? hacia la c?mara donde dorm?a el mayorcito. Era ya bastante vieja...

FERRANDO. ?Vieja y gitana? Bruja sin duda.

JIMENO. Se sent? a su lado, y le estuvo mirando largo rato, sin apartar de ?l los ojos ni un instante; pero los criados la vieron y la arrojaron a palos. Desde aquel d?a empez? a enflaquecer el ni?o, a llorar continuamente, y por ?ltimo, a los pocos d?as cay? gravemente enfermo; la p?cara de la bruja le hab?a hechizado.

GUZM?N. ?Diantre!

JIMENO. Y a?n su aya asegur? que en el silencio de la noche hab?a o?do varias veces que andaba alguien en su habitaci?n, y que una legi?n de brujas jugaban con el ni?o a la pelota, sacudi?ndole furiosas contra la pared.

FERRANDO. ?Qu? horror! Yo me hubiera muerto de miedo.

JIMENO. Todo esto alarm? al Conde, y tom? sus medidas para pillar a la gitana; cay? efectivamente en el garlito, y al otro d?a fue quemada p?blicamente, para escarmiento de viejas.

GUZM?N. ?Cu?nto me alegro! ?Y el chico?

JIMENO. Empez? a engordar inmediatamente.

FERRANDO. Eso era natural.

JIMENO. Y a guiarse por mis consejos, hubiera sido tambi?n tostada la hija, la hija de la hechicera.

FERRANDO. ?Pues por supuesto!... Dime con qui?n andas...

JIMENO. No quisieron entenderme, y bien pronto tuvieron lugar de arrepentirse.

GUZM?N. ?C?mo!
